Cinematic Post Production For Your Photos

I'm a film student when I took photos, I always think about making the photo more "Cinematic".
Cinematic means that give your scene or character more story on it. And also color will be one of the elements to tell a story. My favorite genre is Sci-Fi and Thriller, so I usually like the cold tone of pictures to show the " Technological mood" and " Future mood ". And I also love "Complimentary" and " Triadic" colors. I like something with high contrast.

Here are two photos that I shot and I edited that to be more cinematic.

Before edit

First, In this photo, I was thinking to make my model be like a character who's in Sci-Fi or Super-hero film. The color of the original photo was too warm. So I adjusted the tone to be cooler to fit my main idea. And also I also made the model's face sharper to fit this character, cause someone who has a round face, might look weaker. But that's just my opinion. And I made her lip a bit red, it can pull our character's personality. Cause he's stronger than others, red also reflects " Dangerous". The color of eyes, I didn't mean to do that honestly. I changed the whole tone and the color of her eyes were just changed together. They are looked bluish now. I didn't mean to do that, but it comes out to the result of what I felt satisfied with. Cause these blue eyes made this character more mystic. Blue eyes are not rare in a Western country, but she's an Asian girl with blue eyes, which adds some story to the photo.

And this photo is the character that I wrote for my Sci-Fi short film. You might notice the composition is a bit weird cause I cut her body too much. The reason why I cut her body, cause that I want the audience to focus on her eyes more. This character has a superpower, she can see the past through her eyes. In the actual film, I did ask the actor to wear a colorful lens on her left eye. So you can see her eyes have different colors in my actual short film.

The original photo was a bit underexposure, so I increase the exposure and decrease the high light to make her face won't be too bright. As we can see, I also make the tone of the photo cold ( Cause it's Sci-Fi short film). And I also increase the clarity to make the shape of the whole character more clear. Honestly, I did want to increase the texture extremely, because in my original idea that this character is like the superhero of a comic book such as Jessica Jones of Marvel. Compare to the previous photo series, I increased more contrast. Cause the last photo which the girl's hair is flying, if I increase more contract, the details of her cloth will be lost too much. On her skin tone, the original photo was too red and orange, which looks very natural for me, so I tried to balance her skin tone to be natural. It might look a bit bluish now, I wish I could edit it better.

Question: Do you think your edited images could confuse or misguide the audience if they can't see the originals?

Answer: From what I said, I'm a film student, and I make stories that are unreal. I do think edited images would confuse and misguide the audience for the " truth". In my edited photos, the story of the photo has been changed a lot. I change the color tone to make the mood different, and I also change their face a bit, and it made my model look different from what they look like in reality.

Question: Can your edited or unedited images be used as of press photographs? Please elaborate on why you think they can or can't be used by news media?

Answer: I think that depends on how much you did in your edit. if you just adjust the exposure a little bit, that should be fine. But if you did the same editing as my edited photos, that shouldn't be used by news media. Cause It will confuse your audience absolutely. For example, you're shooting on a bright day, but you just changed the exposure, highlight, shadow, and it looks like a cloudy day. Your audience will think about the background story of the photo is on a cloudy day. Yes, they got the wrong information. I saw a cat picture, she was lying beside some brown liquid (It might be coke). And his owner just changed the color tone, and the photo looks like that cat is bleeding.

Question: What are the main differences between art and press photography?

Answer:  You can add your subjective definition to your photos in art photography. And also you can add any elements you want to your photos. You can define the meaning and concept of all your works. But in press photography, you have to make sure you're objective. You can't put too much of your personal emotions on your works. In my opinion, press photos are data. People can analyze everything based on that data.
